An enemy exists only when, at least potentially, one fighting collectivity of people confronts a similar collectivity. Schmidt reigns contempt on those who try to avoid this existential distinction and hope that if it is ignored, it will disappear. The concern here is neither abstractions nor normative ideals, but with inherent reality.
