In the 19 forties and 19 fifties, due an large part to the g i bill, which is this massive piece of legislation passed to support returning soldiers after the war. Suddenly you have people going to college whose parents wouldn't have gone to college,. who were a middle or working class. As those college sizes grow, so to do college s dependence on the s a ts. By the 19 fiftie, 19 sixties, it is just a standard part of college admissions.
