i meet some very fortunate people who have immense resources and can do a lot of good in the world, but are fundamentally sceptical about giving to charity. And i always encounter something we might call the myth of the self made man,. The idea that there's some is somehow an ethically impregnable position to notice all the ways in which you are responsible for all your good luck. You weren't born into wealth, and you made it all yourself, and you don't owe anyone anything. In fact, giving people less fortunate than yourself any of the resources you've acquired is not really helping them. There's some inrandian ethic of radical selfishness combined with a vision of capitalism
