The Pro-Atheanian Movement in the Peloponnesian War

The Peloponnesian War exploded forth at the end of the 430s BC, and so too did the tone of Euripides's place. At the outside of the war, we see several of his plays an underlying theme of patriotic sentiment. The Heraclai Dye is a play about the ungratefulness of Sparta towards Athens. It was pro-Atheanian, anti-Dorian propaganda to lift Athenian spirits, and to paint the Spartans in the worst possible light. In the spring of 430 BC, we see action taking in the religious sphere as well. As we discussed in episode 59, cults of Zeus Eletherius were instituted on special occasions
