The Paranoid Style of the New Deal
In Hofstadter's time, the type of paranoid style he's referring to, or it's the same kind, but he's identifying that there's a shift. And the shift is that these people largely feel dispossessed. They feel alienated from the American way of life. To them, the conspiracy has already occurred. The government has been taken over. All the institutions are just liberal woke institutions, trying to spread identity politics and other negative qualities. So certain political figures who were then associated with these ideals would be could be demonized.
