The imperial apparatus seems to thrive on a mix of self confidence and anxiety that wants no embrace of loss. Bergman writes, it requires little imagination to see that our contemporary voicing of lamentations with its honest grief is countered by the denials that are set in motion as business as usual. The church must reckon with the ambiguous situation in which the United States has both chosen people and empire.
