The Mammal Virus

The virus has been detected in about 18 mammal species in the US, particularly carnivore species like foxes, raccoons, bears and mountain lions. We're also seeing it in marine mammals such as seals and otters. Right now this is a virus that is still really a bird virus. It's really optimized to replicate and transmit in birds. But we know, we talked a little bit about these flu viruses can't change and this virus has got to undergo some mutations to switch from being a bird virus to being a mammal virus.
