She gave up meat and alcohol and eventually sex as penance for previous sins. She also did a thing that was kind of a common practice during the Middle Ages, which was the mortification of the flesh. A hair shirt is a very coarse or prickly shirt that you wear under your clothing so that it physically irritates your skin all day long. And she started wearing that before she stopped having sex with her husband because she wore it while pregnant at one point.
