CHAPTER

The Importance of Compromising in Relationships

In a functional relationship, when you get rid of compromise and you switch to a model of what we could call submission, you actually get much better outcomes. When you compromise, you've got two people who are now incentivized to exaggerate their desires. So if a decision comes down to something that makes either me or you more comfortable and I have the final call, I'm probably going to go with whatever decision or ultimate conclusion makes you slightly more comfortable. That ultimately can lead us to even subconsciously hold those more extreme views and resent the other partner for pulling us away from them.
