The Soul Brother No. 1: Papa's Got a Brand New Bag
Papa's was James Brown's first top 10 pop hit in 1965. The song placed the rhythmic emphasis on the first beat, rather than second and fourth beats. It became the bedrock of funk and other forms of rhythmic music. On his 1967 No. 7 hit, Cold Sweat, you can really hear how he distilled the one down to its essence.
