The Devotion of Bhudeva

In ancient times, they had this idea of mutuality. You take care of the gods who rule over the earth, and those gods will take care of you. But in modern times we can certainly have a sense of devotion for this planet on which we live. And if we truly have a devotional planet, why are we to defile the air with pollution?
