What's the History of Vinyl Records?

Vinyl collectors weren't exclusively DJs in the 80s and 90s. Thomas Edison gave us what we kind of understand as recorded and played back sound. Edward Leon Scott de Martinville came a good 20 years before him, although apparently he wasn't aware of his work.
