Austria liked the idea of an independent poland serving as a buffer between them russia, but they didn't want to upset their alliance with the russians. But then came a little break. In may 17 91, the reformers in poland attempted to assert independence from russia. And it was the question of how to handle the situation in poland that led frederick william and leopold to meet in pilnitz in august 17 91.
