Mysterium was Jung's magnum opus, his large work. It summarizes everything he had done in exploring what really goes on in healing. The alchemical metaphor is about prechemists who literally cooked worthless material in a vessel thinking it would turn into gold or a diamond. And it works in their mind by the synthesis of opposites.
