The Origins of O2 in the Solar System

The O2 must have been formed before the actual comet assembled, so we think it built up on those tiny ice grains. It seems almost to be a kind of a chemical fossil from the birth of the solar system because that's when the comet was made. How do you know this isn't just sort of surface chemistry happening? After all, it's only gases coming off the surface that you've been analyzing.
