For centuries, women in the philippines enjoyed premarital sex. Men paid a dowry of gold, jewelry or slaves. Daughters were valuable, and divorce was common. If a woman wanted to remarry, she could take her property,. half the children and half of the shared slaves kinship and economic interdependence much enhanced a woman's bargaining power. In late antiquity, europe was patriarchal, but with several latent advantages: nuclear families without cousin marriage, partisptary assemblies and state inte institutions.
