Eerice, a 26 year old patient of mine whom i had been seeing for a good close to three years. She was brought to the hospital where i worked as a psychiatrist with a history of major depression. And she'd made a lot of progress over the years. One evening, id get a call in the middle of the night that erica has taken an overdose. But arica actually lived some 300 kilometers from where i am and would come and see me once every month,. together with her mum, you know, for review. When she was released from the er, they went back to to the village where she lived with her mother and father.
Dr. Dixon Chibanda, a psychiatrist in Zimbabwe, has been on a mission for years to help people gain access to mental healthcare in his community, where there's only one psychiatrist for every 1.5 million people. To bridge the gap and provide people with the help they need, Dixon turned to a rather unorthodox group for help: grandmothers.
