After the i m f crisis, the gap between wealthy and poor coreans widened. There was a growing sense that no matter how hard you tried, you couldn't make it in south korea. The whole entire son n kongnam style is really kind of a parody of this life style that a lot of crens are not actually living. But those same themes of cynicism about economic inequality would re emerge from South Korea years later - only darker.
