Joyce had been a Catholic and the Catholic priest turns his back, how it used to before this new novel that comes along. Joyce who was brought up on the symbol as a Roman Catholic. He is bringing God down through the roof and whether you can catch on and act up to you. Finnegan's work works whether anybody can read it or not. It terminated a whole period in the history of literature. I tell my students if you want a real, real guide to Ulysses get hold of the magic man as the same ideas.
