The Myth of Pythagoras

Pythagoras' father was actually a merchant from the island of Samos named Minusarchus. He found himself in the city of Delphi, home of the famous oracle. The myth behind the oracle was that the god Apollo had slain a monster known as Python on that spot. So to honor the god Apollo and the Pythian priestess, he changed his wife's name to Pythias. Also decided to name his son Pythagoras to honor the oracle of Apollo.
