The most relevant fact from the cold war is that we competed with the soviet union. And this did not escalate to a hot war, which could have gone nuclear. How was that achieved? Well, it was a really complex mix of caution and deterrence, basically. We invested tons and tons of money in devising dee strategies that would allow us to protect allies in western europe or in east asia. If you think about the cuban missile crisis, there is sort of a similar approach here.
