The book is based on the love affair of Florentino's parents. His father was a telegraph operator, his mother went to school and had letters from him. He also read about two old Americans who met in Acapulco every year for 40 years before they were murdered by boatmen with their oars. Through their death, the secret of their secret romance became known.
