The Virtues of a Widow

It is ordinary for a woman to love her husband as long as he lives, but to love him so well that after his death she will hear of no other is a degree of love that belongs only to those who are widows indeed. The true widow is a little march violet in the church, sending forth an incomparable sweetness by the aroma of her devotion and keeping herself almost always concealed under the broad leaves of her loneliness. She grows in cool and uncultivated places, not willing to be bothered by the conversation of worldly people. Necessity and plainness should be the two ornaments of her dress, humility and charity,. courtesy and meekness, modesty and purity,
