How Do You Create Symbolic Illustrations?

Cristo neman has been illustrating the new yorker e financial column by james orick for years. He says he tries to think in what symbol is known, and then twist that image into a different one. Neman: "It's just running these two wheels against each other and then being very, um, very attentive"
