The Triumph of Charles the Great
26,000 fighting men on 400 ships made their way across the Mediterranean from Barcelona to Tunis. Charles led it in person and showed substantial personal courage over the course of the campaign. Tunis soon fell, and it was a genuine victory for the emperor. But as was always the case during Charles's reign, the triumph was fleeting at best. Another round of wars with Francis and France was on the horizon.
