Connecting Academically Rigid Education With the Resources of the Community

We are stuck in a debate that I sometimes describe as waiting for Superman. Diane Ravitch wrote a bestseller about how don't blame the schools, it's all the surrounding concerns of the social issues that arise. The community school model says we're going to start with that academically rigorous school as the core. And we're Going to work around that. So there are programs, it's hot breakfast in the morning and teachers are there to help kids with their homework. All those things you don't get very much of go on after school.
