The Importance of Country of Origin Labeling in Meatpacking

In the 1990s, the United States signed NAFTA with Canada and Mexico. The World Trade Organization says that we're not allowed to treat our companies any more favorably than those based in countries we sign these agreements with. In this case, Canada and Mexico's meat producers liked the old system where their cows and pigs could be counted as US cows and pigs. They went to the World Trade Organization and filed a lawsuit. Short story, the U.S. lost the case, and so now we're in the middle of the appeal process. Eventually, if the loss is upheld, the World Trade Organisation said that Canada and Mexico would be allowed to charge extra taxes for some products from the United States
