The Carbohydrate Hypothesis

We were better at digesting the food, unlocking its energy, and we'd developed cooking. That would have given us the energy double whammy we needed for that sharp increase in brain size. But presumably we've known about our ability to cook for some time. This isn't new and the number of genes we have for the enzymes that help us digest food is also increasing.
