The Importance of Impartiality in African American History

John Hope Franklin is an African American historian and he's deeply indebted to generations of black historians that have come before him. But nonetheless he's one of the first black historians who really becomes truly embraced by the American historical profession. And what I think Knopf want from Franklin is this sense that he transcends his race. It also gets talked about in internal memos that are flying around the publishing house. The white historians who are advocates for Franklin describe him as the type of historian who is happy to write about African American history but can transcend temptation to be an advocate for his race.
