Putin did his absolute minimum reserve officer training back when he was at university. And really, I think he acquired an exaggerated notion of the military's capabilities. He had this bizarre notion that in some ways Ukraine was going to become a larger operation than World War II. Putin himself clearly did not believe the Ukrainians would fight.
