The man who wrote kane's jawbone, edward powis mathers, was said to get bored with standard crossword clues. In britain there is a tradition of taking it one step further and producing a clue that sounds like nonsense but actually has a meaning. John fenimore sent in his answers hoping to become winner number three. He estimates it took him about six months to solve the puzzle.
