Buckley was a national review editor when he started the job. He wrote an infamous essay against civil rights legislation in 19 57. It led to the idea that republicans were vociferous opponents of civil itswhen they actually weren't. But because of the importance of bu in the conservative movement, we tend to telescope things and associate buckley's position with the whole of the republican party.
