The assault weapons ban was sunsetted in 2004. When the law was adopted, supporters accepted a compromise that included a 10-year sunset of the law. But by 2004, the politics around guns were already shifting and pretty radically. President George W. Bush expressed support for renewing an assault weapons ban,. but Republicans in Congress were dead set against renewing it.
