The Disadvantages of Artificial Reefs

Coral reef decline worldwide is a serious problem. Artificial reefs aren't a silver bullet that's going to fix the environmental conditions that contribute to declining coral stocks, says Bill Lindberg. The ecological conditions which contribute to the natural reefs are also necessary for the ecological functioning of the artificial reefs in its context. But it's a tool, not a substitute.
