What Happened to the Palaces?
In the decades leading up to 1200 BC, there were dozens of palaces scattered across large swaths of Greece. They served as a combination of elite residents, craft production center, trade entrapo and administrative hub for surrounding territory. A century after that, however, not a single one of those palaces was left as a functioning center. The overall population of Greece would decline by between a half and two-thirds over the next century and a half.
