Star Wars - Is There a Story?

Before star wars, was there a story or a mythology that unified people? I think movies have taken the place of things that used to exist before movies did. There are not as many things and perkins. That's actually kind of where my brain is going, is movies especially, have been fier in the absence of the unifiers that we used to have in history.
