Apple, ipod and e phone are responsible for the design priority change. People began to want great experiences in all of their products. Slack has seen expedintial growth by taking a product that's been around for years, group chat, and building a much better u x around it. This trend has led to far larger design teams and making design a full part of the product development life cycle rather than an afterthought.
