Introduction

Joe Antoneenie is an astronomer by academic training. He wants to avoid what he sees as a common trap that many astronomers fall into when talking about the history of their field. As we trace the development of astronomy, we're going to encounter people, ideas and cultures which are quite different from our modern culture. Even giants of science from just a few centuries ago thought in ways that we today would consider to be profoundly unscientific.
