The Theory of Splitting
In the 1980s, psychiatrist in Canada described a condition that they called stepmother syndrome. This was made as a neurotic diagnosis and I'm very pleased it isn't anymore. It shows that the thinking in psychiatry and in mental health at the time was both influenced by the myths and helped to reinforce them. How far back does it go? I think the idea is that you refer to Marina Abruna Betelheim.
