Athletic Transitions and Track Triumphs

A discussion on drink preferences during pregnancy, the excitement around international track events, and notable performances in 10k races. The conversation also explores doping skepticism in sports, outlier performances in trail running, and the psychological aspects of competition among athletes.

Speaker 2
I greatly miss it. So I'm not drinking it right now in pregnancy. And I miss coming downstairs. Now my brain is like a one track brain from fluffles. But it used to be athletic greens because I was like, this stuff makes me feel good. But now I'm just cleaning it off for whatever reason you leave like athletic greens residue all over the counters. It's like the poop things. I know. And so now my primary role in athletic greens is just scrubbing it off counters. And I'm like, maybe it will just like diffuse into me.
Speaker 1
Maybe you just lick the counter.
Speaker 3
That's a good idea. Actually.
Speaker 2
Yeah. Like the counter and I'll get like all kinds of other things too. Awesome.
Speaker 1
So on the news and fun things. First up is the pre classic, pre-funting classic up in Oregon. Months before the Olympic trials in the US, tons of international superstar athletes. And it was a barn burner. It looked like such a fun event actually. We're going to the Olympic trials this year. So we'll be up in Oregon in a
Speaker 2
month. But I kind of like in future years, I want to go. The crowd, like it looked like a really fun venue and event. And we're big fans of like all things sports. And I just want to go for like the sports spectacle of it. So
Speaker 1
we're going to bring all these like little rugrats we have. Yeah,
Speaker 3
they're going to get to learn about about track. Leo's going to be like, I wish it were trucks. Oh man. Okay.
Speaker 1
So first up is the 10k world record was set for women by Beatrice Chibet. And interestingly, it was the Kenyan Olympic trials being hosted by the pre-classic kind of an interesting wrinkle there. How do you
Speaker 2
think that worked like logistically? And like, you know, I imagine that had to be some like organization between Kenya and
Speaker 1
pre-classic or Kenya in the diamond. You don't want to race at altitude. Yes, that's true. Kenya for these events. And so you need to find another host and you know, pretty probably knows that you might get a world record out of the Kenyan Olympic trials. And so she ran a 28 minute 54 second
Speaker 2
10k, which is bananas. That is so fast. So to date, a woman has never gone under 29 before. So 2854 is so fast. This is actually only her second ever 10k. So that's pretty wild. But she does hold the world record in the 5k and 1413. So she is just like stacking up world
Speaker 1
records. But it's probably she's 1427 back to back for this 10k record, essentially. So fast. It is so fast. And actually, I made a comment after that. It's like, you know, it's really nice to be in trail running. Yeah. Well, it just points out, it's hard to be a sports fan in general. I was thinking about Tade Bagacha, who won the Jared Italian this week, one of the first grand tour in a dominant fashion, won six stages, won by nine minutes, 58 seconds, which is the highest in many, many, many decades. And you know, I think as you think about that, we're the hugest Tade fans in the world. But like, in cycling, if someone's that dominant, you're like, well, how are they that dominant? And the answer could just be that like, oh, the sport's actually clean now. And there's one freak, which is great. That would make me really happy. But like, obviously, the cynical brain goes to more illicit means that have been huge in cycling in the past. Similarly, every single time I see a world record in track, I'm
Speaker 2
like, I don't know, man, I just don't know. And I think track and like cycling are actually in very different categories in trail and ultra racing, because the denominator is so big in terms of who participates and who historically have had positive doping tests that you imagine that to rise to the top and to rise to the top consistently in that way, you just have to think about it. Or is it like if someone like Courtney in trail and ultra race, there's more variables in trail and ultra. Yeah. And it's like the denominator is much smaller. There's like much different variables. And Courtney is like, you know, Courtney is the most delightful person in the world. Yeah, she's
Speaker 3
totally kidding. Absolutely guaranteed that Courtney is
Speaker 1
clean for sure. You can always say anything with certainty in the world, right? Yeah. Nutrition labels might be fake. Everything's like Courtney, it absolutely, like if there was anything in the world that would break my world. Yes. Yeah. Courtney is the cleanest person I've ever met in anything like across the board.
Speaker 2
But it goes to show how outliers in trail and ultra running are vastly different than outliers. I think in these sports that have larger denominators and more incentive structures.
Speaker 1
Or so we think, you know, because like, obviously Courtney is, and Courtney proves that you don't have to be, but who knows. So, you know, Beatrice, what she did out there was incredible. And let's celebrate that. I think what I've decided as a sports fan is that skeptical voice. I'm just not going to let make my decision making because otherwise it's not fun. It's hard to watch. Just become impossible to watch because everything that you're rooting for can feel fake. And we have that across genders, do I mean, we watch the men's the men's Bowerman mile was insane. One of the coolest races I've ever seen. If you haven't seen it, go search men's Bowerman mile into Google and watch it for four minutes. Do it right now. Less than four minutes, actually. Spoiler. Do it right now before we talk about it, just so that you don't know what's gonna happen. And now that we've talked about it, or you've seen it, it was the build as Jacob Ingebritzen, who Olympic gold medalist versus Josh Kerr, who is coming on and is running incredibly strong. And the best part of all is they are trash talking so hardcore back and forth. It's actually kind of fun. I kind
Speaker 2
of enjoy it. Like for me, it's almost like watching like drama unfold. I'm like, give me more of the trash talk. I hate to participate in it, but I kind of like viewing it.
Speaker 1
Yeah. So Josh took on Jacob and kicked from 600 meters out, which is Jacob's classic move and beat him, just ran him off his wheel. And they
Speaker 2
both finished in three minutes, 45 seconds, which is so fast. I think said, Jacob's PR is three, four day three. So quite fast. This is also, yeah, I was first time racing all year. So he's coming back from like a nagging Achilles injury. And I'm really curious to see like he's kind of more in his base field now. I'm curious to
Speaker 1
see what he does with like more. He's more his quote base field. Yeah, I'm sure. Okay. Show me his fucking Strava. You know, the problem is this is becoming a psychological war. Oh,
Speaker 3
it is. Yes.
Speaker 1
So I can't trust shit. So like there was a workout video released last week by Flowtrack of Jacob Indubridson at Flagstaff doing 400s. And I was like, I don't trust any of it.
Speaker 2
Why did you think he was like purposely not doing that to do my
Speaker 1
name? Not after. Just like you don't know what his actual effort was with it was way easier. Like based on the workout, I'm like, I think he's acting like he's in base phase. They're like, give us he's making it seem easier. Like, or his splits were not insane. They weren't that fast for someone at that level. And I think that part of it was like, hey, I'm going to get them and I'm going to tell them the space so that when I go to this race, it's viewed that way. So for example, Jacob was asked after the race. Are you surprised by Josh Kerr? Who, reminder, just whooped his ass, who was asked by a couple of times a second. He said, absolutely not. I actually hoped it would happen since he was so cocky, it was expected. And it's great. He didn't just chicken out when it mattered. What? I love
Speaker 2
it so much. I know it's kind of, I actually feel like both of them are playing personas. Yeah. They're both playing characters in this. And it is kind of fascinating to watch on vault, especially because track could really use this. Like track is at an era. Actually, granted, there's a lot of investors coming into track and lots of new meets and broadcasts and different things that we're thinking about. But track could really use personalities like
Speaker 1
this. I think this adds so much to it. That means that I don't want to ever be a part of it or have any athlete. I just get a part of this. So maybe that shows how we view sports. And that's actually an interesting thought about running in general and endurance sports is we feel like most of the listeners to this that are runners feel very close to the professional runners. And so there's a little bit of like a, you know, you don't want to see that negative stuff. But like when we're watching the NBA or whatever, I'm like, give it all to me. I know it's like when I watch Aisaki, I'm like, give me the fights. But they're the same people. They're same real people. Who knows where it goes from here. Okay. I wanted to talk briefly about my experience with sodium bicarbonate. Actually, first before you do that, give
Speaker 2
me a prediction.
