Florence has all three of the same characteristics as pericles and athens. It's a republic in a world where monarchy is more standard form of government. You have an extra feeling of we need to make up for that by having extra claims of legitimacy from other directions. People who felt really legitimate didn't, at least until later, feel the need for a as oo and renasence.
