The Sick King

The dragon represents a threat to the hero's safe little village world. It is in the rising up that he reaches his heroic potential and grows into an adult. Almost as ancient, although perhaps less well known, is the sick king. This sickness may be a literal physical malady but it too is symbolic of a failure of leadership or egregious corruption on the king's part.
