When we're tired, a lot of the systems that keep our nerves transmitting correctly start to get a little bit frayed. That's probably what's happening to the familiarity signaling within your brain. Younger people are more likely to have deja vu because they have more excitatory neurotransmitters. As you age, as these levels of neurotransmitters start to decrease, we start seeing decreases in deja vU.
