In English, before the turn, to the 20th centuries, nice meant ignorant. It meant stupid. So niceness often leaves people in bad situations because it doesn't do the hard work of assessing what happened. Niseness is selfish. Kindness focuses on my responsibility to my fellow humans. And that'll often involve personal cost.
