Italian politics was defined by nothing so much as intense local rivalry. It would have been inconceivable to tell a Florentine and a Neapolitan, hey, you guys are actually the same thing. As a result of these cycles, the idea of Italian national unity was preposterous. They wanted to cut each other's throats, not seeing patriotic hymns to the fatherland.
