In a longitudinal study of friends with benefits, we found that most of these relationships either dissolved or changed form in the span of a year. So if you're looking at them as a vehicle for starting and finding long term love, that might not be the optimal approach unless it's also what your partner wants. i find that the people who tended to be the most disappointed were the ones who wanted a romantic relationship going in.
