Phyllis's Journey to Freedom
The author's mother, Phyllis, fled Staten Island in 1943 to volunteer with the Red Cross. They were known as the Clubmobile Corps, or as the troops kept insisting on calling them donut dollies. Her driver, a woman named Jill Pitts was about six one and she is the inspiration for Dorothy in the novel.
