The Worst of Both Worlds, Right?
reference counting does really well when there are objects that just only ever have one reference, and they don't have references to anything else. In languages with lots of garbage collection, you'll often find piois where the coler provides the buffer. That's more efficient in raff counted languages too, but it's less of a gap. So it's not, it's a clever design which obtains for you the worst of both worlds, more or less.
