The death and rebirth cycle of every enlightenment thinker i've ever read. All of them have a death and rebirth, so does the hero's journey. I don't think happiness is an end in itself - it's about getting rid of your illusions. Just like tony de mello says, if you truly love some one, you should be able to say 'I leave you free to follow your inclinations'
