Post World War Two Invocations of the Insurrection Act
The president can invoke the insurrection act. But that authority to deploy the armed forces will expire after seven days, unless congress passes a joint resolution extending the deployment. If congress is adjourned or out of session, that time line may be delayed up to 72 hours to allow it for reconvening - but not more than that. The joint resolution would extend the authority to demploy troops for 14 daysa that could be renewed for subsequent 14 day periods at congress's discretion. And then at intervals along the way, for a longer depointment, congress would again periodically have to weigh in.
